Frequently Asked Questions About Hypnotherapy
If you’re considering hypnotherapy for the first time, you may have questions about how it works, what happens during a session and whether it could be right for you.
It’s completely normal to want to understand more before getting started. Below you’ll find answers to some of the questions I’m asked most often about Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and working with me online.
If you have a question that isn’t answered here, please feel free to get in touch.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy combines elements of psychotherapy with guided relaxation and hypnosis.
Rather than spending a lot of time focusing on everything that has gone wrong in the past, the approach is focused on where you are now, where you would like to be and the positive steps that can help you move forward.
The aim is to help you develop a more helpful way of thinking, build confidence and make positive changes that support the future you want.
Every session is tailored to you and what you would like to achieve.
We’ll usually begin by talking about how things have been going, what you would like to change and any progress you have made since your previous session.
The session may then include Solution Focused techniques, discussion and guided hypnosis or relaxation.
You remain comfortable and in control throughout. There is no need to worry about being made to do anything you don’t want to do.
Yes.
Hypnosis is not the same as being unconscious or asleep. You remain aware of what is happening and can hear and respond to me throughout the session.
Many people describe the experience as being deeply relaxed, calm or very focused.
You remain in control throughout the process.
No.
Hypnosis requires your cooperation. You cannot be forced to do something against your wishes simply because you are in hypnosis.
You remain aware of what is happening and can choose whether to engage with the process.
For most people, hypnotherapy is considered a gentle and relaxing experience when delivered appropriately by a trained practitioner.
Before beginning, we’ll discuss your circumstances and what you would like support with so that I can make sure the approach is appropriate for you.
If you have a medical or psychological condition that you are receiving treatment for, you should continue to work with your existing healthcare professional and discuss any concerns with them.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can be used to support people who are experiencing stress, anxiety and unhelpful thought patterns.
The focus is on helping you develop more helpful ways of responding to challenges and building a calmer, more positive mindset.
Everyone is different, so the number of sessions and the results you experience will vary from person to person.
Hypnotherapy can be used as part of a positive approach to changing habits and your relationship with food.
Rather than focusing simply on a number on the scales, we can explore the thoughts, behaviours and habits that may be getting in the way of the changes you want to make.
The aim is to help you develop healthier, more sustainable habits and a more positive relationship with yourself and your goals.

There isn’t a fixed number of sessions that will be right for everyone.
The number of sessions depends on what you would like to work on, your circumstances and the progress you make.
During your sessions, we’ll regularly review how things are going and what you would like to achieve next.
You don’t need to have any particular beliefs or previous experience of hypnosis.
You don’t need to be able to meditate, relax easily or have been hypnotised before.
I’ll explain what to expect and guide you through the process at your own pace.
Being open to the process and willing to engage with the changes you want to make is more important than having a particular belief about hypnosis.
Everyone experiences hypnosis differently.
Some people feel deeply relaxed, while others simply notice that they become very focused on what is being said.
You may feel physically relaxed, notice your thoughts becoming quieter or simply experience a sense of calm.
There is no single “correct” way to experience hypnosis.
Absolutely.
You remain in control throughout your session and can stop or pause at any time.
Before we begin, I’ll explain what we’re going to do and give you the opportunity to ask questions or raise any concerns.
My aim is to create a calm, comfortable and supportive environment where you feel at ease.
There’s no complicated preparation required.
